The North Posey Youth Soccer League is open to all children between preschool (ages 4 and up) and 5th grade. Players are assigned to teams based on the grade they will be entering in August. Gameplay and practices are designed to teach and enhance skills at an appropriate level for each group. Details for each age group are listed below.
Age Groups
Division 1: PreK and K (ages 4 and up)
Our goal for Division 1 is to help the kids develop an understanding and enjoyment of the game while covering the basic skills of dribbling and passing. At this age level, games consist of four 7-minute quarters with 5 players from each team on the field at a time.
Division 2: 1st and 2nd Grade
In Division 2 we build on the fundamentals of soccer that were taught in their previous years – more advanced techniques of passing and shooting the ball, as well as proper offensive/defensive positions and the rules of the game. At this age level, games consist of four 10-minute quarters with 7 players from each team on the field at a time.
Division 3: 3rd through 5th Grade
Division 3 puts the boys and girls on separate teams and focuses on helping players sharpen their skills on the field, both in terms of ball handling and on-field communication, as well as their endurance in full-field play. At this age level, games consist of four 12-minute quarters with 10 players from each team on the field at a time.
Equipment (all ages)
Players at every age level are required to wear shin guards. Those that include a foot strap and cover the ankle bones are recommended for maximum safety.
Soccer cleats are recommended but tennis shoes are acceptable. If wearing another type of cleat, such as baseball cleats, the front spike will need to be cut/filed off in order to be appropriate for soccer play.
Soccer balls are available during practices and games but it is strongly encouraged that each player have their own ball for individual practice drills. The following sizes are used:
PreK/K: Size 3 soccer ball
1st-5th Grade: Size 4 ball
Because soccer involves quite a bit of running, EVERY player is suggested to have a water bottle at practices and games. There are many inexpensive options and parents are encouraged to find a bottle or water jug with a capacity of at least 32 ounces for Division 2 and 64 ounces for Division 3.
Volunteers
All of the work that is done for the Youth League is on a volunteer basis - none of the managers, coaches, concession workers, or referees get paid for their time. Therefore, any help that parents want to offer is always welcome. For a more specific list of how you can get involved, visit our Volunteer page.
